Social media has made the new ways of organizing the women rights not only in a single region but simply all over the world. This is done through by sharing the experiences and encouragement of solidarity. Moria Donegan is the creator of controversial “Media Men List” and she writes about a movement named ‘Me too’, that who it has caused a shift in the feminism that falls between the self-sufficiency and individualism. The movement Me Too is basically held on the basis of collective liberation and it brings a strain of feminism based on solidarity and community which helps in reshaping the feminism. This movement promotes the idea of responsibility towards the elimination of sexism to strive for the world providing equal rights to women.
Still, women have not presented the way they should be on traditional media. According to the report of Women’s media center in 2017, women are getting only 37 percent of the bylines in TV, print media, News, and internet. And only the 14-16 percent of the contributors in Wikipedia are women. In technology sector too, women are not given the place they should be and they are underrepresented.
Social Media really can help to finish this gap. According to a research, the countries which have high inequities in the offline life have women with more online presence. Pakistan is a country where women have more followers on social media as compared to the men, especially on Google+, facebook, Instagram and Twitter. To get more fame on Instagram, gain more followers by purchasing form here. In the US, women use social media more than men and are on all the platforms of social media almost. But despite this rate of use, male users are retweeted more than the female users.
According to the statistics, men are retweeted two times more than the women and the women are more subject to the cyber abuse. There was a study conducted on the internet use and women politicians role in the Middle East that helped in founding theta social media lowers the cost of people who participate in political campaigns on social media for the citizens and there is always a gendered space in terms of participation among male and female who are on social media platforms. There are gendered barriers present which increase the chances of online harassment to women similarly as the chances of harassment in public place.
But there is a difference between online and offline harassment and that is, the women rights are inhibited offline because of the norms and values, restrictions, some economic barriers and many more. Unlike this, the women on social media could raise their voice against injustice and harassment by using social media platforms. According to Atlantic, the reason due to which less number of women is retweeted as compared to men is that they are less likely to use the traditional hashtags which normally men use. other things which could really help in promoting women right by using social media platforms is to increase the number of women working in the social media based companies.
With all these steps, women can raise their voices and could also take steps against cyber harassment.
